Reviving local news: The resurrection of The Tempe Tribune

With the relaunch of The Tempe Tribune in early February of this year, Steve Strickbine, president of Times Media Group, continues his 25-year mission to rescue failing community newspapers, closed family newspapers and blooming news deserts. The Tempe Daily News ceased publication in 2009 after 122 consecutive years of serving the community. The Tempe Tribune delivers to over 20,000 readers every Sunday, and the digital edition emails to over 25,000 readers every Saturday evening.

Conceived by Caoimhe and Gerard Donnelly, it acts as a conduit, offering items such as three hours of transcription service with unlimited uploads and, using artificial intelligence, creating article outlines in its free version.

In a message to readers, Greg Farmer, executive editor of The Kansas City Star, introduced a new and improved digital experience: The Star’s Edition. ProPublica was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for the work of Joshua Kaplan, Justin Elliott, Brett Murphy, Alex Mierjeski and Kirsten Berg. The award was presented for groundbreaking and ambitious reporting that pierced the thick wall of secrecy surrounding the Supreme Court to reveal how a small group of politically influential billionaires wooed justices with lavish gifts and travel, pushing the Court to adopt its first code of conduct.

Jeremy Gulban was trying to pause, after a spree of acquiring newspapers in small towns where Wall Street firms had milked their local papers dry. But he couldn’t resist the opportunity when Alden Global Capital closed a group of six Minnesota papers in late April.
News releases on the New York Times Co. website generally announce promotions, new products, awards and the like. So the statement from a Times spokesperson posted to the site on April 25 stood out: “For anyone who understands the role of the free press in a democracy, it should be troubling that President Biden has so actively and effectively avoided questions from independent journalists during his term,” said the release, which followed a Politico article about a beef between the White House and the Times.
ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN all face questions about their future, just as one of the toughest journalistic assignments looms.

Armed with a passion for community and a commitment to preserving local journalism, Richardson has embarked on a mission to breathe new life into recently closed newspapers that were handed back to a local bank. Under the banner of Richardson Media Group, he's resurrected several Tennessee titles, igniting hope and rejuvenating the voices of these communities.

For the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, dabbling in new ideas is at the center of the organization’s identity as they have a new CEO and publisher at the helm. Whether the company is expanding into the greater Minnesota community, creating partnerships or investing in products, changes are happening in an effort to build on the paper's 157-year legacy.
Generating revenue remains a constant challenge. Some news outlets are reinventing special sections and editions, a traditional segment of most newspapers, to attract more readers and new and loyal advertisers. Here are four examples that publications and news outlets can adopt.

In interviews with E&P, they spoke about their new roles, how they got there and how they hope to advance their individual organizations and journalism writ large.

Meredith Owensby Harrell has sold Carter Publishing Co., Inc. d/b/a Kernersville (North Carolina) News to Paxton Media Group, according to John Cribb of Cribb, Cope & Potts who represented the Carter/Owensby-Harrell family in the transaction. Terms were not disclosed.
